Campervan-Friendly Pubs in Ireland: Overnight Parking & Road Trip Guide

Planning a campervan road trip around Ireland? A welcoming pub, good food and a nearby place to park can make a memorable stop. But a pub car park is not automatically an authorised overnight motorhome stopover. This guide explains how to find suitable places, plan a route and confirm permission before you arrive.

Can you stay overnight in a pub car park in Ireland?

Sometimes, with the operator’s express permission and subject to local rules. There is no universal right to stay overnight in a privately owned pub car park. Ask the business whether campervans are accepted, whether overnight occupation is permitted, whether there is a charge, and whether there are vehicle-size or arrival-time restrictions. A car park being open to customers does not itself mean sleeping in a vehicle is allowed.

Five Irish regions worth exploring by campervan

1. Causeway Coast, County Antrim

Build a scenic day around the Causeway Coastal Route, coastal villages and viewpoints. Search for designated campervan accommodation before you set off, and contact any pub directly if you hope to park overnight. Northern Ireland has its own local parking and road rules.

2. Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way

Explore the coastline, Gaeltacht villages and beaches, then choose an authorised campsite or motorhome stopover for the night. For a pub meal, confirm whether a suitable parking space is available for the vehicle; do not assume overnight use is included.

3. Galway and Connemara

Pair coastal drives with local food, music and village visits. In busy seaside locations, parking restrictions and vehicle height limits can make pre-planning particularly important.

4. Kerry and the Ring of Kerry

Take your time on narrow roads and check the suitability of your vehicle for individual routes. Book a designated overnight location and treat a pub stop as a separate visit unless the operator explicitly permits staying.

5. Waterford and the Copper Coast

Combine coastal scenery, historic towns and local restaurants. Check posted signs, local authority restrictions and campsite availability before choosing where to sleep.

What to ask a pub before arriving

  • Do you explicitly allow overnight campervan or motorhome stays?
  • Is advance booking required, and are there charges or minimum-spend conditions?
  • Is the parking area suitable for the length and height of my vehicle?
  • Are toilets available after closing, and is there fresh water or waste disposal?
  • What are the permitted arrival and departure times?
  • Are there local restrictions, gates or noise rules?

Ask for confirmation in writing when possible. Never empty wastewater or toilet cassettes at a pub unless the venue has a designated, approved disposal point.

Campervan pub-stopover etiquette

Arrive during agreed hours, park only where directed, keep noise low and support the business where practical. Avoid putting out awnings, chairs or camping equipment unless specifically permitted. Never drive after drinking alcohol. Remember that sleeping in a parked vehicle does not override parking or other applicable rules.

Planning your 2027 Irish road trip

Start with the route, check driving distances and book suitable overnight stops before travelling. Popular summer weekends and major events can create high demand for authorised campervan spaces. For inspiration, see our 2027 campervan travel guide and Ireland events calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Are all Irish pubs campervan-friendly?

No. Policies vary by venue, and permission to park for a meal is different from permission to stay overnight.

Is overnight parking free?

Not necessarily. Some operators charge, some set conditions, and others do not permit overnight stays.

Can I use a pub car park instead of a campsite?

Only when the owner or operator expressly allows it and all applicable rules are followed. Designated campsites are usually a more predictable choice for facilities.

Should I book campervan parking in advance?

Yes, particularly during festivals, school holidays and busy summer weekends.

Editorial note: This guide does not certify any named pub as an authorised overnight stopover. Always verify arrangements directly before travelling.
